First Monday at Jordan Hall: Bernstein, Mendelssohn, Mozart
Boston, Massachusetts
Monday, 5 March 2018 - 7:30 PM
First Mondays at Jordan Hall are brilliant with music, performed by some of the world’s best chamber musicians. First Mondays are fresh and full of imaginative pairings of well-loved classics and new work. They’re in Jordan Hall, one of the finest places on the planet to hear music of this caliber. Oh, and First Mondays are free.

This season, First Monday celebrates the life and works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Every concert includes great compositions by Mozart and/or works related to him. We’ve always liked celebrating composer anniversaries, with this season also featuring Enrique Granados and Leonard Bernstein. But Mozart? Well, we think every year is his anniversary - even if the dates don’t fit, he’s a man for all the ages!

Continuing the season-long celebration of Mozart, tonight's concert presents his great Quintet for Winds and Piano in E-flat Major, K.452. He wrote it in 1784 and in a letter to his father stated “I myself consider it the best thing I have written in my life.” Of course, much very great music came before and later - but that’s a strong thing to say!

Also on the program are works by other young composers:
Leonard Bernstein wrote his trio at age 19 while a student at Harvard and it already reveals some of the directions his composing would go.

The Mendelssohn Sextet, Opus 110, has a big opus number, only because it was published late in his life. He actually wrote it when he was just 15! It’s clear that by then he was also a remarkable pianist.

Compared to those works, we’d have to call Mozart at age 28 “old”. Go figure . . .
