Biography

Cellist Jerry Liu is currently a graduate student of Yeesun Kim at New England Conservatory. He received a bachelor's degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music studying with Jennifer Culp and Jean-Michel Fonteneau, and was the recipient of the ISOM Foundation Scholarship. Liu developed a passion for classical music while playing in the San Francisco Youth Orchestra, and has studied under notable cello teachers around the Bay Area such as Sieun Lin, Malkhaz Dediashvili, Michail Gelfandbein, and Roger Emanuels. He has also participated in master classes with Menahem Pressler, Matt Haimovitz, Alan Harris, Norman Fischer, Mark Summers, Robert Plane, and members of the Borromeo quartet.

Inspired by the diverse music and venues that San Francisco had to offer, Jerry continues to explore and engage with musicians from different musical backgrounds. He has recorded, performed, and produced cds with ensembles around the Bay Area, including local bands such as Magik Magik Orchestra, Ensemble Mik Nawooj, Family Crest, The Moonlight Orchestra and The Definite Articles, Heather Scarlett Rose, Old Skool Cafe, and was the former cellist of the punk opera band, Charlie and the Infinite. Being an advocate of cello quartets, he frequently takes his instrument on the street accompanied by other cellists. By expanding his horizons, he aspires to incorporate these different forms of musical expression into his own work.

An active performer of new music, Liu frequently collaborates with composers and given premieres of their pieces. His first experience came from the strings project at San Francisco Conservatory and has kept an open mind to the process of working with these artists ever since. In 2012 he had the opportunity to work with John Adams on an international Shaker Loops film documentary.

As a composer/ arranger himself, Liu writes mostly for cello repertoire and experiments with a classically influenced genre. His piece, Suite 7 Days for solo cello, will be published in  March 2013. The CD album will also be available for purchase at the BCP store or on itunes.

Jerry has received awards from the 2011 Yen Liang Young Artist Competition, San Francisco Conservatory Concerto Competition, Chinese Music Teachers Association of Northern California, Peninsula Symphony Youth Musician Competition, Junior Bach Festival, and VOCE. He was also honored to perform as a soloist with several orchestras, including the San Francisco Conservatory Orchestra, Diablo Symphony Orchestra, El Camino Youth Symphony, Monta Vista Chamber Orchestra, and De Anza College Chamber Orchestra.
