Dolce Suono Ensemble performed a themed Debussy concert, “Dialogue of the Winds,” at Philadelphia’s Trinity Center for Urban Life on Sunday, February 17, 2013.  The concert ranged from works by Mozart to Saint-Säens to Shostakovich performed by four highly reputable chamber musicians: Anthony McGill, clarinet; Mimi Stillman, flute; Burchard Tang, viola; Charles Abramovic, piano.

Taking turns playing in different formations throughout the afternoon performance, the artists created a stimulating aural landscape—with flute, clarinet, and piano; flute and piano; clarinet and piano; and viola, clarinet, and piano.

Two Debussy works performed proved particularly stunning: Première Rhapsodie for Clarinet and Piano; Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (arranged for flute and piano). These duet performances sang with pure impressionist sentiment for phrasing, color, and line.  Mr. McGill’s performance produced a clear, unadulterated sound that transported the listener—as if the musical line was married to the space in which it was performed. Likewise, Ms. Stillman’s playing recalled the virgin innocence of the original symphonic tone poem, performed in this concert with only flute and piano.  Mr. Abramovic’s ease of touch and sound at the keyboard was a delight to both see and hear throughout the entire program.

Dolce Suono has many ensemble successes, most notable for commissioning 23 new compositions since 2005. Philadelphia is fortunate to have this formidable resident chamber music ensemble with a number of concerts in the greater Philadelphia area. Click here to see their complete concert listing.
