REVIEW by Mark Greenfest, freelance contributor New Music Connoisseur of BLOGARHYTHM, Peri Mauer, composer. April 6, 2011 at 4:16pm Review: Mark Greenfest - freelance contributor, New Music Connoisseur April 5, 2011 Blogarhythm, composed and conducted by Peri Mauer, opened the Music With a View program, Mad Chatters, at the Flea Theater, Friday, April 1, 2011 at 7 pm. Curated by Kathleen Supove, the festival featured different themes - this piece was an entirely acoustic piece, commenting on the wired electronic age, and the composition, Blogarhythm, had its own ensemble, with 24 professional musicians, all volunteering, including contralto Christina Ascher, flutists Pamela Sklar, Hugh Williams, and Michael Laderman, clarinetist Gwen Appel, Ms. Supove as pianist, and other noted and talented performers, including five cellists. The piece opened with an enormous wavelike crescendo, arching together the polyrthyms of multiple musical lines, in one energetic gesture - Ms. Mauer sai

Life on Earth, for chamber orchestra Peri Mauer – composer, conductor, cellist Music With a View 2013 Flea Theater, NYC June 19, 2013 Review by Sandra Coffin I consider myself fortunate to have been a part of the performance of Peri Mauer’s Life On Earth in Music With a View 2013, June 19th at The Flea Theater in Tribeca. The foundation of the piece is a series of structured solos and duets, interspersed with background free improvisations by individuals and groups of instrumentalists using melodic and rhythmic motifs found in the structured sections. The material is beautifully written, with expressive melodies and intricately woven rhythmic subtleties. The solo parts vary, depicting different moods and times of day. The overall effect is of major events taking place amidst a constant stream of small ordinary happenings, all based on the same short motifs. Ms. Mauer both played cello and conducted, shaping sections between the major events for a range of tone colors and dynamics.

Peri Mauer: Illuminations of the Night premiere New York Repertory Orchestra David Leibowitz, conductor The Church of St. Mary the Virgin, NYC Saturday, May 18th, 2013 Written by Scottie Roche Have you ever stayed up all night in the company of Manhattan? Really taken in her nightly refusal to slumber. Her lights flash bright gashes into the tenebrous night. She punctures the darkness with the polychromatic twinklings of an unwillingness to rest. Peri Mauer’s Illuminations of the Night is evocative of such nights. The piece received its shining world premiere by the New York Repertory Orchestra on Saturday night in a program that also included Debussy’s Three Nocturnes and Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D minor. The concert took place at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin just a few feet from one of New York’s greatest light shows, Times Square. Mauer’s musical nightscape pulses with the insistent rhythms and syncopated energies of late night New York. She offers up a vision of New Y

"The program opened boldly with the world premiere of Peri Mauer’s Illuminations of the Night, a work drawing its inspiration from observations by the composer of changes in the city as she often worked through the night composing. Not surprisingly, this Manhattan cityscape even alludes to such familiar urban night sounds as garbage trucks and passing sirens, as well as serene and suspended interludes of relative quiet. The orchestration was expert, and the formal structure of the piece clearly defined. Beginning dramatically with aggressive brass and percussion, such challenging statements gave way to a beautifully transparent interlude before the city seemed once again to awaken in all its vitality. A less reverberant acoustic would undoubtedly reveal much detail that was unavoidably blurred at this hearing. But, the commitment of the players and the enthusiastic reception by the listeners should fully justify conductor Leibowitz’s decision to include something totally new as grist
