NEC Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, Wolff & Loebel/Verdi, Beethoven
Boston, Massachusetts
Friday, 20 January 2012 - 8:00 PM
Conductors: David Loebel; Hugh Wolff
The Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, NEC Preparatory School's senior-most large ensemble, performs tonight under the direction of NEC's Stanford and Norma Jean Calderwood Director of Orchestras, Hugh Wolff, and Associate Director of Orchestras David Loebel. In addition to the extraordinary theatricality of works by Verdi, Beethoven and Debussy, the orchestra will delve into a 21st Century symphonic work that has received a great deal of attention and praise: Michael Gandolfi's The Garden of Cosmic Speculation.

Gandolfi, who chairs NEC's Composition Department, was inspired by Charles Jencks' book about one of the most important gardens in Europe, created by Jencks, an architectural critic and designer, and his late wife, the landscape architect and author Maggie Keswick. The Garden of Cosmic Speculation is a landscape that celebrates the new sciences of complexity and chaos theory and consists of a series of metaphors exploring the origins, the destiny and the substance of the Universe. Gandolfi's work consists of numerous sections corresponding to different areas of the garden. The pieces can be selected and arranged freely by performers just as visitors to the garden can choose which areas they want to see. Debussy's La Mer is performed as part of the 2012 150th Birthday celebrations for Debussy.
