NEC Wind Ensemble, Peltz / Gabrieli, McPhee, Messiaen, Strauss
Boston, Massachusetts
Tuesday, 13 November 2012 - 7:00 PM
Charles Peltz, Director of Wind Ensemble Activities, conducts the NEC Wind Ensemble in a Gabrieli Canzone and Richard Strauss' Sonatina No. 2 in E-flat, Op. 143 ("Happy Workshop"). Jorge Soto M.M.'13 takes over the podium to conduct excerpts from Colin McPhee's Concerto for Wind Orchestra. Stay tuned for further details. The 12-year old Prep composer, pianist, organist and singer Forrest Eimold (in photo) is soloist in Messiaen's Oiseaux exotiques. Composed in 1955-56, Oiseaux exotiques is Messiaen’s second work inspired by the call of birds. Containing the avian songs of birds of America and India, the piece for piano and small orchestra (winds, brass, percussion) was composed for Pierre Boulez’s Domaine Musical concerts and given its premiere by that group and pianist Yvonne Loriod in 1956. One listener, struck by its vivid coloration (including the screech of a minah bird and the warble of the American wood thrush), remembers the occasion as “marvelous, above all because of the joy and energy which emanated from the work.”

The new, earlier 7 p.m. start time makes it easy for working people and families to attend.

The Gabrieli Project

In anticipation of the 400th anniversary of the death of composer Giovanni Gabrieli (c.1555–1612), members of the New England Conservatory community have joined forces to create and disseminate performing editions for modern instruments of some key Gabrieli early editions. The works performed on this season's NEC Wind Ensemble concerts have been edited by NEC Wind Ensemble director Charles Peltz and composer Kathryn Salfelder '09.
