NEC Contemporary Ensemble
Boston, Massachusetts
Monday, 23 February 2015 - 8:15 PM
Conductor: John Heiss
Modernist masterworks in two back-to-back concerts.

Start your evening at 7pm with seven selections from Luciano Berio's Sequenza series, highlighting solo virtuosity. Then, take a few steps over to Jordan Hall for this performance of Gyorgy Ligeti's Aventures, which will begin after the conclusion of the Berio concert.

Since 1967, John Heiss has taught NEC students the roots of 20th-century modernism both in the classroom and as a conductor and coach. His courses on Ives, Schoenberg, and Stravinsky have shaped generations of musicians.

Each year Heiss recruits students interested in performing 20th- and 21st-century music to join the NEC Contemporary Ensemble. With tonight's concert, Heiss returns to a composer whose 1993 visit is still dear to his heart, with a suite that Heiss describes as "an opera in disguise, hysterically funny. It blew our minds when it premiered in 1963."
