NEC Jazz Orchestra, Schaphorst, Moran
Boston, Massachusetts
Thursday, 16 April 2015 - 8:00 PM
Conductor: Ken Schaphorst
Ken Schaphorst conducts the NEC Jazz Orchestra in works by Duke Ellington and Gil Evans.

Pianist Jason Moran of the jazz faculty joins the Jazz Orchestra for the finale of the Ellington set, "New World A-Comin'."

The second half consists entirely of works arranged by Gil Evans, starting with an Ellington segue penned by Dave Brubeck in 1956. "The Duke," according to Brubeck, "might be the first jazz composition to have the bass line go through all 12 notes of the musical scale in the first 8 bars … My original title for the piece was 'The Duke Meets Darius Milhaud'."

Gil Evans's collaborative work with Miles Davis as writer, cowriter, and arranger is heard in an assortment of originals and adaptations. The evening closes with three back-to-back tracks from their Porgy and Bess album, recorded in 1958. "Gone" is Evans's interpretation of Gershwin's "Gone, Gone, Gone" (the answer to the question "Where is brudder Robbins?"), which rolls into the hit "Summertime."
