NEC Philharmonia, Wolff / Hsu / Beethoven, Dutilleux, Lalo
Boston, Massachusetts
Wednesday, 10 February 2016 - 7:30 PM
Ensemble: NEC Philharmonia
Conductor: Hugh Wolff
This season, NEC's orchestra programs allow you to discover the music of living composers, alongside familiar masterworks.

The centennial of composer Henri Dutilleux (1916–2013) is being marked by performances of his music at NEC and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This results in a great opportunity to hear two great orchestras perform Métaboles, which is on BSO programs starting April 21—or simply to increase your exposure to this too-seldom-performed composer, who also appears on BSO programs starting January 14 and February 25.

Métaboles is a symbol of Henri Dutilleux’s search for a new kind of musical form. Rather than structuring this piece based on conventional models, he sought to develop the piece based on the evolutionary and “metabolic” process of nature itself, materializing in the way each section subtly morphs into the next.

Luke Hsu, chosen by competition as tonight's soloist in Lalo's Symphonie espagnole, is completing his second graduate program at NEC as a student of Donald Weilerstein.
