The Harriman-Jewell Series will inaugurate its new season with the Sphinx Virtuosi, an acclaimed chamber orchestra that exemplifies how diversity is enriching classical music in America. The group of 18 young Black and Latino classical string soloists will play a free Discovery Concert at the Folly Theater on Saturday, September 24. In addition, the ensemble will give a special performance as part of the Harriman-Jewell Series’ gala, Prelude 2016, on Monday, September 26.

The New York Times reported that the conductorless Sphinx Virtuosi displays “all the hallmarks of a first-rate string ensemble.” That’s not surprising, given the high quality of its young musicians. Members of Sphinx have completed and continue to pursue their studies at the nation’s top music schools.

For its free concert on September 24, the Sphinx Virtuosi will play a full-evening program of Latin music, “Viajes Latinos” (Latin Journeys). The concert of sizzling Latin music will give ample demonstration of the group’s prowess.

In addition to the Discovery Concert and Prelude 2016, other community events are planned for the Sphinx Virtuosi’s visit to Kansas City:

Saturday, September 24 – post-performance Q&A/autograph signing
The Series will host a Q&A with Sphinx artists and the audience following the performance and the ensemble members will sign autographs in the lobby after the Q&A.

Sunday, September 25 – 2 p.m. Catalyst Quartet at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
The Series and The Nelson-Atkins Museum will partner to present the Catalyst Quartet in an intimate performance setting onsite at the Museum. The event will be open to the public and will occur in the American Rotunda on the 2nd floor of the east wing.

Monday, September 26 – 10 a.m. School Performance – Sphinx Virtuosi at Ewing Marion Kauffman School
The Series will bring the Sphinx Virtuosi to perform for the students at Ewing Marion Kauffman School. Not open to the public.

Monday, September 26 – 6 p.m. Prelude 2016: An Evening of Discovery
The Series will present Sphinx Virtuosi at its annual Prelude gala benefit – a fundraiser for Education Events and Discovery Concerts. Tickets can be purchased here.
