Tenor Ben Bliss will return to the Kansas City community to sing his American recital debut as a Harriman-Jewell Series free Discovery Concert with pianist Lachlan Glen on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at 7 p.m. at the Folly Theater (300 W. 12th St., Kansas City, Mo.).

Ben Bliss, who is rapidly making his mark on the opera world, will soon join an elite list of renowned tenors who sang their American recital debuts for the Harriman-Jewell Series: most noteworthy are Luciano Pavarotti (1973), Ben Heppner (1997), Juan Diego Flórez (2002), and Michael Fabiano (2013).

What makes the Bliss debut especially exciting is that he is a Prairie Village, Kansas native. His mother, Judy Bliss, is well known among local opera lovers for her work with the chorus of the Lyric Opera of Kansas City; clearly something of the mother’s talent has rubbed off on the son. The young tenor is in good company in his opera successes: fellow Prairie Village native Joyce DiDonato is a global opera superstar who regularly appears for the Harriman-Jewell Series, and will star in two concerts (December 7 and April 28) for the Series this season.

After graduating from Shawnee Mission East in 2004, Ben Bliss received a degree in film but in 2011 he decided to pursue a singing career. It was a wise choice, as his career has been skyrocketing ever since. After auditioning for none other than Plácido Domingo, Bliss was invited to join the Los Angeles Opera’s L.A. Young Artist Program.

In 2013, Bliss was accepted into the New York-based Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, which resulted in Bliss singing the role of Vogelsang in the Met’s 2014 HD broadcast of Die Meistersinger. Bliss is also the recipient of the Mozart and Plácido Domingo awards at the 2015 Francisco Viñas International Competition in Barcelona.

Australia-born pianist Lachlan Glen is a graduate of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program (2015) and The Juilliard School (M.M. 2013), and maintains a private vocal coaching studio in New York City. In addition to other creative pursuits, Glen co-hosts The Operative Podcast, which features conversations with star singers, emerging artists, and other opera insiders.

In addition to the Discovery Concert, Ben Bliss will lead a free vocal master class with preselected vocal students on Sunday, October 23 at 1 p.m., at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, Kansas 66208. The public is welcome to observe the master class.
