NEC Jazz Honors Ensemble 2015-2016
Boston, Massachusetts
Wednesday, 18 May 2016 - 8:30 PM
This is a rescheduling of the Jazz Honors Ensemble from its original date of March 29. The group will be performing its originally scheduled repertoire.

Show up at 7:30 this evening to hear more small-ensemble music from two of NEC's top chamber music ensembles. This is the companionable music whose scale and intimate sound anticipated the jazz combo that was born a century ago. The repertoire connection with tonight's 7:30 set is significant: Debussy was influenced by and has himself influenced the sounds of jazz, and Previn has been active in both jazz and classical music worlds.

NEC Honors Ensembles

Each year, an audition committee of professional musicians selects a few exceptional student ensembles to represent the NEC Honors Ensemble Program. The ensembles work with a faculty coach and are given an opportunity to perform a spring recital in NEC's Jordan Hall.

The NEC Jazz Honors Ensemble 2015-2016 has focused on the overarching idea of musical reinvention as one of their main themes. Their aim has been to take various forms of art—previously composed music, visual art, theater, dance, etc.—and either transform it, or compose a piece inspired by it. Each member of the band—Chloe Brisson, voice; Gustavo D'Amico, saxophone; Caio Afiune, guitar; Isaac Levien, bass; and Ryan Sands, drums—brought in ideas and material, which in many cases were developed further as a group, creating a unique sense of complete collaboration not often seen in other ensembles. The concert will feature a mix of original compositions and arrangements by group members. Their faculty coach is Dominique Eade.
