NEC Philharmonia, Wolff /Schoenberg, Dun, Mussorgsky: Pieces Inspired by Paintings
Boston, Massachusetts
Wednesday, 30 November 2016 - 7:30 PM
Ensemble: NEC Philharmonia
Conductor: Hugh Wolff
This season, NEC's orchestra programs allow you to discover the music of living composers, alongside familiar masterworks.

Following engagements with the Atlanta Symphony and Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Hugh Wolff returns to conduct the NEC Philharmonia in three works inspired by paintings—two of them by living composers.

Composer Adam Schoenberg (b. 1980) says that a "visceral reaction" to a group of paintings by Mark Rothko hanging at New York's Museum of Modern Art led to his piece on this program, whose movements are named after colors found in the paintings.

Also a visitor to MoMA, Tan Dun (b. 1957) was inspired by paintings of Paul Klee to create "a dialogue between myself and Klee's paintings, not in any sense a musical description of particular works."

Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, on the other hand, is intended as sonic renderings of specific works by his friend Viktor Hartmann, and serves as a memorial since Hartmann had died of an aneurysm at age 39.

Wolff and the NEC Philharmonia return to Jordan Hall Friday night with the Mussorgsky in a Celebrity Series of Boston subscription concert that is part of Rob Kapilow's "What Makes It Great?" series of performance/talks. Join Kapilow and the orchestra as they dissect and examine Ravel’s arrangement of this great work, accompanied by projections of many of the original Hartmann images which inspired the work.
