Shostakovich Triumphant
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Friday, 13 October 2017 - 8:00 PM
Sunday, 15 October 2017 - 2:30 PM
Conductor: Krzysztof Urbanski
After a successful debut in the 2014-2015 season, Polish conductor Krzysztof Urbanski returns to lead the compelling young violinist Ray Chen in his own Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra debut. As the winner of the Queen Elizabeth (2009) and Yehudi Menuhin (2008) Competitions, Chen has dazzled audiences across the world with his virtuosity and charismatic musicianship. He performs Max Bruch’s sumptuous Violin Concerto No. 1 on a program that will also feature Beethoven’s Overture to Egmont. Urbanski and the Pittsburgh Symphony close the program with the politically charged Symphony No. 5 by Dmitri Shostakovich, a work that delicately and brilliantly balances authentic artistic expression and conformity to nationalistic propaganda. Shostakovich described the triumphant tone of the final movement “as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering, ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’” Come hear Urbanski and the Pittsburgh Symphony illuminate the complexities of this masterpiece!
