Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band: Old World...New World
Vernon Hills, Illinois
Saturday, 16 November 2019 - 7:00 PM
Welcome to the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band’s Eighteenth Annual Fall Concert – “Old World…New World”.

The title of the concert comes from the fact that Western “classical” music as embodied in the 19th century “Romantic” period was developed around traditional European sounds and musical emotional forms and tropes that we all have become familiar with even if we are not experts in classical music. These influences are everywhere, even in our most popular forms of music. Some of them come from Italian Opera (which many of us first were acquainted with from Bugs Bunny cartoon like “The Rabbit of Seville” – based on Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” - check it out on YouTube!) to British music like Pomp and Circumstance, played at almost every graduation and composed by Sir Edward Elgar – the composer of the Enigma Variations, a portion of which will be performed tonight. We all have heard and recognize the Blue Danube Waltzes. However, as the 19th century drew to a close and the 20th century proceeded, those Romantic forms were exported to the Western Hemisphere and took on colors of the Americas. Dvorak used them in the New World Symphony. Composers like Moncayo, Revueltas, and Ginastera adapted Mexican and South American folkloric tunes and rhythms to traditional ensembles like the Symphonic Orchestra. As wind bands developed modern day composers, such as Julie Giroux, have adapted Romantic forms of expression into the American wind band tradition.

I believe the music presented tonight, including all but 1 movement of the entire New World Symphony will illustrate this in a way that will please and move you. From the pure comedy and joy of the Overture to The Italian Girl in Algiers to the lilting waltz rhythms of the Blue Danube of Strauss to the romantic and ennobling melodies of Córdoba and Nimrod all the way to the excitement of the Huapango of Moncayo and the New World Symphony this evening’s concert will be one of pure musical enjoyment.

Not to be outdone, the Jazz Band will perform four selections that will shift your focus to some of the great tunes and jazz styles of Doc Severinsen and Buddy Rich, to the rock funk of Tower of Power!

Where else can you hear a concert that includes Rossini, Dvorak, Buddy Rich, and Tower of Power? We hope you enjoy this eclectic performance of so many varieties of music; as always we ask that you please “spread the word” about us and join us for our Holiday performances in 2019 Sunday, Dec 7 at St Mary in Buffalo Grove) as well as our many planned concerts in 2020 (our Spring Concert at Stevenson High School on Sunday April 19 will be a salute to France and in June our Jazz Band will present their second annual all-Jazz concert). We have plans for many more wonderful concerts in the future as we move into our nineteenth, and yes, our Gala 20th year!

Again, on behalf of the members of the Band, the Village of Buffalo Grove, its Board and Village President, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support that has allowed us to be one of the premiere Community Bands in Illinois.
