Celtic Connections 2020
Glasgow, Scotland
Thursday, 30 January 2020 - 7:30 PM
Conductor: Teddy Abrams
First performed in January 2019 – winning an extended standing ovation - Sky is a concerto by acclaimed US composer Michael Torke, inspired by and written for the dazzling Kentucky-born classical violinist and bluegrass fiddler Tessa Lark, its soloist again for tonight’s European première, with our own Royal Scottish National Orchestra. A multi-award-winning alumna of both New England Conservatory and the Juilliard School, Lark has collaborated with such cross-genre greats as Mitsuko Uchida, Itzhak Perlman, Edgar Meyer and Mark O’Connor, while Gramophone calls Torke’s oeuvre “some of the most optimistic, joyful and thoroughly uplifting music to appear in recent years”.

Winner of an inaugural Danny Kyle Open Stage Award at Celtic Connections 1999, Scottish harpist, singer, pianist and composer Phamie Gow unveiled her New Voices commission, Lammermuir, at the following year’s festival. Nowadays a regular on Classic FM and Caffé Nero playlists, she revisits the piece 20 years on in a new, fully-orchestrated version.
