Biography
(1801-1835).  Italian composer.  From his earliest compositions, Bellini's music was infused with melodies of lyrical beauty.  These gifts were quickly recognized, and he received several commissions.  His mature 'bel canto' operas achieved wild success in his native country, and later abroad.  And Bellini's approach to melody influenced a generation of composers in both vocal and instrumental music, including Berlioz and Chopin.  Wagner praised Bellini's operas because "...his music is strongly felt and intimately bound up with the words".

Bellini's life was tragically brief.  His operas "I Capuleti e i Montecchi", "I Puritani" and "La Sonnambula", written during his final years, are among his most enduring successes.  "Norma" is considered to be his masterpiece.
