(1760 - 1842). He had great influence on French musical life as director of the Paris Conservatoire from 1822-42.
As an Italian composer of mostly operas, he was an important transitional figure between the Classical and Romantic periods. While his operas are now rarely performed, his Requiem in C minor endures as a choral masterpiece.
