Biography
(1525 - 1594).  Much of this Italian composer's career was centered in Rome, and his greatest achievements are in the form of liturgical music and motets. 

When the Council of Trent expressed concerns that composers were making sacred texts unintelligible with their complex musical textures, Palestrina responded with his polyphonic choral masterpiece, the "Pope Marcellus Mass" (1567).  The clarity and beauty of this work has inspired and influenced composers to this day.
