Biography
(1848-1918).  English composer, educator, and author of books on music.  He joined the Royal College of Music in 1883, becoming director there the following year - a post he held until his death.  Parry composed music is several genres.  Although his choral music was the subject of scathing ridicule by George Bernard Shaw, some of Parry's best works in this genre have been revived in recent years.  Among them, "Blest Pair of Sirens", "Songs of Farewell", "The Soul's Ransom", and "Nativity Ode".   His setting of Blake's "Jerusalem" and the anthem "I was glad" are perennial favorites.
