Biography
(1875 - 1937).  French composer.  He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, and while a student he produced several compositions that quickly became well known.  His solo piano works are among the most innovative ever written.  His orchestrations of piano works by Debussy and Mussorgsky (especially, Pictures at an Exhibition) became widely popular.  His own compositions explored harmonies that seemed very modern, but the structure and form of his works were often inspired by classicism.

Any list of his most important works would include his Piano Concerto in G major, the dance inspired works "Daphnis et Chloe", Bolero, La Valse, and "Valses nobles et sentimentales", the Mother Goose Suite, the suite "Le Tombeau de Couperin", the String Quartet in F major, Rapsodie espagnole, the piano suite "Gaspard de la nuit", and his "Pavane for a Dead Princess".
