Biography
(1825-1899).  Austrian composer.

He was the first born son of Johann Strauss Sr.  A famous musician himself, Strauss Sr. forbade his son a musical career.  But Johann Strauss Jr. cared more for his violin lessons than his schoolwork. In 1844 he performed his first concert at the Dommayer in Hietzing, a Vienna suburb. He was successful and soon rose to be the most dangerous competitor to his father.

When the elder Strauss died in 1849, Johann Strauss Jr. had already established himself as Vienna's Waltz King.  His tours through Europe and America trigged a world wide Strauss hysteria.

Offenbach's operettas later inspired Strauss to drift towards stageworks.  His first operetta "Die Fledermaus" had its premiere in 1871, followed in 1874 by "The Gypsy Baron".

In all, Johann Strauss Jr. wrote 17 operettas and a virtually innumerable array of waltzes, the best known of which is "On the Beautiful Blue Danube".
