Biography
(1899-1985).  Hungarian violinist and conductor.  He was music director and conductor laureate of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1938 until his death in 1985.  Ormandy succeeded Leopold Stokowski as music director, who had already brought the orchestra to a high standard.  Yet Ormandy continued to build the Philadelphia Orchestra into one of the very finest orchestras of the 20th century.  The legacy of recordings by Ormandy and the Philadelphia, many with the greatest soloists of the day, remains among the very best of the analog era.
