Biography
Hailed by Newsday for “extraordinary musicianship”, cellist Brinton Averil Smith has performed throughout the US and around the world as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. Mr. Smith is the principal cellist of the Houston Symphony and a professor at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music. His recordings include the Miklos Rozsa cello concerto with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra for Koch and chamber music of Faure with violinist Gil Shaham for Canary Classics. After earning a bachelors degree in mathematics at age 17, Smith received his masters and doctoral degrees at Juilliard studying with Zara Nelsova and has also been a member of the New York Philharmonic and the principal cellist of the San Diego and Fort Worth symphonies.
