Since joining The Cleveland Orchestra as principal flute in September 1990, Joshua Smith has regularly appeared as a featured soloist with the Orchestra, performing repertoire ranging from Bach to Penderecki. Born in New Mexico, Joshua Smith attended Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music. In 1990, while still a student at Curtis, Mr. Smith was invited to audition for The Cleveland Orchestra and was appointed to his current position. Later that year, he graduated with an artist’s diploma from Curtis. Joshua Smith currently serves as head of the flute department of the Cleveland Institute of Music and is head of the woodwind faculty at Kent/Blossom Music, a professional training program. As a coach and teacher, Joshua Smith has led masterclasses across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
