Biography
Thomas Schippers (1930-1977) conducted the Metropolitan Opera from the time he was 23, including the first performance in the Met's present home in 1966. Although he was born in Michigan and educated at Curtis, Juilliard and Yale, his conducting was characterized by an Italianate phrasing and rubato. Indeed, he performed frequently at La Scala and co-founded the Spoleto Festival with Gian Carlo Menotti. In 1970 Schippers became music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Subscriptions doubled before his life was cut short by lung cancer.
