Biography
Violist Youming Chen is an active recitalist, chamber, and orchestral musician. He has performed on many acclaimed international stages, namely Carnegie, Alice Tully, Royal Albert, Avery Fisher, Lucern, Konzerthaus-Berlin, De Montfort, and National Taiwan Concert Hall. He was also featured on WQXR’s (New York City) Young Artist Showcase and his collaboration with Sir Colin Davis at the BBC Proms as principal violist in the Juilliard/ Royal Academy of Music Orchestra was televised throughout the UK. Mr. Chen has participated in the Pacific Music Festival (Japan), Aspen Music Festival, Prussia Cove (England), and Music@Menlo. He was a former violist of the Gustave Rosseels Quartet and a founding member of the Fader Piano Quartet, which received the Saunderson Award at the Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition. Mr. Chen’s teachers include Paul Neubauer, Toby Appel, Hsin-Yun Huang, Yizhak Schotten, Victoria Chiang, Alan de Veritch, and Ben Lin. His chamber coaches include members of Brentano, Chester, Cleveland, Concord, Emerson, Guarneri, Juilliard, Mendelssohn, and Orion quartets. He received his master’s degree (MM) from The Juilliard School, bachelor’s degree (BM) from the University of Michigan and is currently a candidate for Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Missouri-Kansas City under the tutelage of Scott Lee. Mr. Chen serves on the chamber music faculty for Heartland Music Academy’s Stringendo Program and its summer chamber music festival. He has also taught at the Performing Arts Institute at Wyoming Seminary College in Pennsylvania and the Five Seasons Chamber Music Festival in Iowa. He resides in Kansas City with his wife, Alice Huang, and their twin daughters.
