Born in Yokohama, Mayumi Sakamoto began to play the piano at age three and was recognized to have absolute pitch at age four. Her positive experience as the youngest competitor at the Tchaikovsky Competition when she was nineteen motivated her decision to enroll at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover, Germany where she graduated in 2007. First-prize winner of the 2004 Grieg Piano Competition, Ms. Sakamoto has performed extensively in Japan and has also played in Austria, Germany, Italy, Norway, Russia, and the United States.
