Biography
Sophia Tegart, flute, is an active soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, and teacher in the Kansas City area. Recently, she advanced to participate in the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition, as well as the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle Competition. She placed second in the collegiate woodwind division, and third in the collegiate chamber music division of the Music Teachers National Association National Competition. An advocate of new music, Sophia frequently premieres newly commissioned solo works, is a member of Musica Nova (a new music ensemble), and has performed at the Society of Composers, Inc. National Student Conference. She not only strives to perform new music, but also enjoys performing early music on traverso. As a soloist, Sophia has performed concertos with Spokane Symphony, Washington-Idaho Symphony, and the Gonzaga Symphony Orchestra. She held positions with the Washington Idaho-Symphony, Walla Walla Symphony, and most recently the Oregon Mozart Players. She has acted as substitute flute in Spokane Symphony, Eugene Symphony, Northwest Bach Festival, and currently subs with Kansas City Symphony. Sophia holds a B.M. in performance and a B.A. in history from Washington State University, and an M.M. in performance and an M.A. in music history from the University of Oregon. Currently, she is working on her D.M.A. in performance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she studies with Mary Posses. She has studied with Ann Marie Yasinitsky, Nancy Andrew, Louise Di Tullio, Bruce Bodden, and Molly Barth. Sophia has performed in master classes with Carol Wincenc, Jeffrey Khaner, Alexa Still, Mary Karen Clardy, Keith Underwood and Mathias Ziegler.
