la
Verdi
(Giuseppe Verdi Symphonic Orchestra and
Chorus) is a major player in Italy’s current cultural landscape. For
proof of this, one need only look to laVerdi’s varied accolades including
a Grammy Award, its numerous international
tours, its rich discography, and the quality of musicians and
conductors that regularly perform with the orchestra.
With the dynamic
Chinese-American conductor Xian Zhang as music director, laVerdi offers a
symphonic season from September to June featuring over 38 programs that are repeated
weekly on Thursday and Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons at the Auditorium
of Milan Cariplo Foundation. There are also several annual holiday concerts held
outside of the regular season, including an Easter performance of one of Bach’s
Passions and a New Years’ performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
Apart from its regular symphonic season, laVerdi Orchestra also offers other
concert series throughout the year. These include “Crescendo in musica”
(Growing Up with Music), a series held on Saturday afternoons dedicated to
children and their families; “Domenica mattina con laVerdi” (Sunday Mornings
with laVerdi) conducted by Giuseppe Grazioli, which features works by famous
composers alongside their forgotten contemporaries; and “laVerdi Barocca” (The
Baroque Orchestra of laVerdi), a vocal and period instrumental ensemble in its
fourth season led by the conductor Ruben Jais.
