Biography
Madalina Nicolescu is a talented and brilliant violist, born in Bucharest, Romania. She began playing the viola at an early age, and, at 19, was accepted at the Malmö Academy of Music , in Sweden where she studied under the supervision of professor and highly acclaimed violist Henrik Frendin. That experience was followed by intense study with well-known professor Rafael Altino, from Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense, Denmark, and principal violist of Odense Symphony Orchestra. She has also studied with Dinu Serfezi, distinguished member of the viola group of Malmö Symphony Orchestra. Madalina has appeared on TV, not only as a soloist, but also as a chamber musician. Her performances were part of a trio with violinist Irina Binder and cellist Elena Hämäläinen, both members of Malmö Opera Orchestra, and broadcasted live on National Swedish Television (TV4). Madalina is a versatile viola player that has shown a special interest in performing different styles of music, from Tango to Classical, and from Boleros to Film and Broadway scores. She has appeared in many shows in Sweden and Denmark, like Jesus Christ Superstar with Swedish acclaimed singer Ola Salo that was recorded on CD, and Spring Awakening among many. She has also recorded a CD as member of Malmö Opera Orchestra, with a program conducted by Joseph Swensen. Madalina has also studied and participated in Master Classes with many highly acclaimed violists and musicians like: Craig Mumm, Miriam Hartman, Dimitri Golovanov, Nikolaj Znaider, Ludovic Marlot, Tatjana Masurenko, Tim Boulton, Barbara Westphal, Giacomo Battarino, Roger Chase, Ina Schluter, Odin Rathnam and Simon Roland-Jones.She has participated in several recognized International Music Festivals, among them: National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands with conductor Ludovic Marlot, Koster Festival Orchestra in Sweden with German conductor Timo Kreuser where she collaborated in chamber music and orchestra performances with among others, exceptionally gifted Lithuanian pianist Ieva Struzaite, brilliant violinist Kinneret Sieradzki, violinist Shlomy Dobrinsky from The Philarmonia Orchestra in London, Casalmaggiore International Festival in Italy where she performed several recitals with among others, italian pianist Giacomo Battarino, violist Alex McLeod and Canadian-Romanian violinist Joenne Dumitrascu. She has also collaborated with different orchestras like among others: The Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, Aalborg Symhpony Orchestra, Camerata Nordica, Malmö Symphony Orchestra and Malmö Opera where in the Fall of 2008, she has participated in a Master Class given by Craig Mumm, Associate Principal Violist of the Metropolitan Opera. Madalina Nicolescu is currently peforming as a soloist, chamber and orchestra musician, and has given a series of successful concerts in Guadalajara, Mexico with talented american pianist Timothy G.Ruff Welch whose experience includes 20 years in Chicago as pianist and choir professor.
