Biography
Pianist Andrew Focks is an internationally recognized artist hailed for his poetic lyricism, depth of interpretation, and ferocious intensity. Met with enthusiastic public response, his performances frequently garner the highest critical acclaim. With a repertoire spanning five centuries of music, Mr. Focks has performed across the United States, Europe, and the People’s Republic of China.

His active performance career has led him internationally to the stages of Vienna Hall, l’Auditorium Marianum, Solitar Universitat Mozarteum, Studienkonzertsaal Universitat Mozarteum, Salzburger Barockmuseum, the Schlosskonzert series in Flachau, and the grand hall of the Sichuan Conservatory of Music (China), among others. Within the United States, Mr. Focks has performed in New York City, Boston, Atlanta, Houston, Tampa, Albuquerque, Ithaca, Swampscott, Manchester, Naples, Salem, Sarasota, Lakeland, and Tallahassee in halls including the Neel Performings Arts Center, Lakeland Center, Duncan Recital Hall, Opperman Concert Hall, Longmire Recital Hall, Dohnanyi Recital Hall, Williams Recital Hall, Lindsay Recital Hall, Hockett Recital Hall, Keller Hall, among many others.

Mr. Focks’ summer appearances have taken him to artist series throughout the Boston area, and repeatedly to the Mozarteum Sommerakademie where he holds four diplomas from the studio of Ya-Fei Chuang. He has also performed in the festival concerts of Corsi Internazionali di Musica (Perugia), Corsi Internazionali di Musica (Urbino), Schlern International Music Festival, and the Chinese-American Piano Institute. Throughout his travels, he has worked in masterclasses with the Vienna Piano Trio, Andras Schiff, Robert Levin, Andre Diev, Dr. Michael Baron, Dr. Ivo Kaltchev, Dr. Daniel Shapiro, Dr. Richard Cionco, and Zhang Jin to name a few.

Mr. Focks has enjoyed success on the competition circuit, including first prizes in the MTNA piano competition at the state and regional level, the MTNA chamber music competition at the state and regional level, the Schlern International Music Competition, and the Imperial Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition.

Equally at home in various genres of literature and performance, Mr. Focks has enjoyed collaborations with various chamber music ensembles, vocalists, instrumentalists, orchestras, and choirs. His versatility led him to explore the pipe organ with Christa Rakich. He has held positions as organist at 2nd Congregational Church in Boxford, Massachusetts, and organist and pianist at Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee, Florida. Mr. Focks currently performs regularly on organ and Steinway in Houston as Keyboard Artist in Residence at Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church. He has recorded organ works for the Boston Classical Music Station.

Mr. Focks began his music training with Patricia Clark, and later continued his musical education at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School in Boston, Massachusetts under concert artist Ya-Fei Chuang (graduating with honors). He went on to receive his bachelor of music degree (cum laude) in piano performance under Dr. Read Gainsford at the Florida State University College of Music. While studying, he was intensely involved in various chamber, solo, and collaborative events and received several distinguished awards and honors, including the Brautlecht Scholarship Award for Performance and Academic Excellence.

Mr. Focks currently resides in Houston, Texas and Bonita Springs, Florida. He attends the Rice University Shepherd School of Music under full scholarship where he is completing his masters of music degree in piano performance under the celebrated pianist, Dr. Jon Kimura Parker. Keen to explore areas outside of the musical world, Mr. Focks received his solo certificate in single aircraft aviation and holds a black belt in the martial arts.
