Biography

Founded in 1991, Belgrade Early Music Festival is the only festival of its kind in Serbia. Devoted to the performance of music from Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods on period instruments, during its rich 20-year history the Festival has welcomed such ensembles as "New Trinity Baroque" (USA), "Sprezzatura" (UK), "Die Kölner Akademie" (Germany), "Block6 the Hague" (Switzerland), “Il Rossignolo” and “Concerto de’ Cavalieri” (Italy), “Artemandoline” and “cantoLX” (Luxemburg), “Antiphonus” and “Minstrel” (Croatia), Serbian ensembles “Renesans”, “Musica Antiqua Serbiana”, “Temenos”, “VisAntiqua”, “Flauto Dolce”, “Studio for Early Music”, “Belgrade Baroque”, “Melódi” and the New Belgrade Opera, as well as such soloists as contralto Marijana Mijanovic (Switzerland/Serbia), soprano Evelyn Tubb (UK), lutenist Michael Fields (UK), harpsichordists Steven Devine (UK) and Predrag Gosta (USA/Serbia), baroque trumpet players Friedemann Immer (Germany) and Luca di Marco (Italy), baroque violinist Ilia Korol (Austria), baroque cellist André Laurent O’Neil (USA), countertenor Predrag Djokovic (Serbia), and many others.


The Artistic Director of the Festival is Predrag Gosta, internationally renowned conductor, harpsichordist and baritone. Maestro Gosta has been the most crucial and influential person in developing the Festival to its current renomé - in the recent years, the Festival has grown to a three-week event, with over 15 concerts in its main series, fringe concerts, as well as number of masterclasses and workshops in historical performance practice. A regular partner of the Festival is the Belgrade Baroque Academy, as well as the New Belgrade Opera, which presents a new baroque opera in conjunction with the Festival since 2013.
