A native of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, bass-baritone Musa Ngqungwana makes his role debuts as Lescaut in Manon Lescaut with Dallas Opera, and King Balthazar in Amahl and the Night Visitors with On Site Opera this season, in addition to performing with the Scottish Symphony Orchestra, with Malmo Opera, and with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.

Recent engagements include the title role in The Glimmerglass Festival’s production of Porgy and Bess; and the role of Queequeg in Moby Dick with Los Angeles Opera, Dallas Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, and Utah Opera; in addition to debuts as Amonasro in Aida ?with English National Opera?; Angelotti in Tosca with the ?Canadian Opera Company; Gottardo in La g?azza ladra? with The Glimmerglass Festival; with Philadelphia Opera, the Norwegian National Opera, and Palm Beach Opera as Zuniga in Carmen;? with Dallas Opera in the company’s production of Eugene Onegin; ?and with Washington National Opera as Colline in La bohème, where he also sang the role of Stephen Kumalo in Lost in the Stars.

Musa’s concert work has included featured performances with The Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as at the U.S. Naval Academy, and at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa.

In 2014, Musa was nominated for the Marian Anderson Award at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, and he was also the Grand Finals Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2013.

He graduated with Honors in Performance (First Class) from the University of Cape Town and is also a graduate of the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA) in Philadelphia.
