(1803 - 1869). French Composer, conductor, and critic. His music was more popular abroad than in France, where he was better known as a writer and critic. His "Treatise on Orchestration" greatly influenced other composers. His passion for the Irish Shakespearean actress Harriet Smithson (who later became his wife) prompted the composition of his Symphonie Fantastique, a romantic masterpiece.
