(1857 - 1919).  Italian pianist, composer, and librettist, he studied at the Naples Conservatory and made his livelihood for many years as a touring pianist, traveling through the Near East and much of Europe.  His admiration of Wagner prompted him to attempt a trilogy of operas on Renaissance subjects, though it was never completed.  Instead, he wrote popular songs, operettas, and musical comedies.
