(1879-1936).  Italian composer. Respighi first pursued a career as a performer, playing in chamber concerts and orchestras.  As a violist, he secured a position for 2 seasons in the orchestra of the Imperial Opera in St. Petersburg, where he met and studied with Rimsky-Korsakov. Respighi's colorful orchestrations are the result of these studies.
