Gioachino Rossini, Composer

(1792 - 1868).  Italian composer who specialized mainly in comic operas.  From about 1810 to 1829 he wrote and premiered 39 operas, many of which became wildly popular.  He was the most celebrated composer of the time, and then he mysteriously retired from the theatrical world at age 37, becoming an occasional writer of light, humorous songs and sacred works.  He received high fees as a celebrity voice teacher, also enjoying activities as a 'bon viviant' host and gourmet.
