The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded in 1919 (the Vienna Philharmonic in 1842) by Los Angeles millionaire and avid amateur musician William Andrews Clark, Jr. The orchestra's first music director was Walter Rothwell, hired away from the St Paul Symphony. After the 94 musicians rehearsed for ten days – beginning on October 13 - the first concert was given on October 24, 1919 at Trinity Auditorium (Los Angeles.)
