Joyce Yang's News Blog: "Wow"-worthy in San Francisco added by joyceyang on 24 May 2013 tag | report
San Francisco Classical Voice praised Joyce Yang's solo and concerto performances in an all-French bill with the Marin Symphony this month, declaring,“[Joyce] set a high bar right off, with her assertive, rhythmically stretchy, and slyly comic reading of ‘Minstrels.’ Ranging from percussive crispness to lingering harmonies to expansive chordal passages, she made the piano aspire to something orchestral. Debussy's illustrative genius was on full display.“ In Ravel's Piano Concerto in G, "the gifted Yang, here making her Marin Symphony debut, can draw on an impressive technical arsenal. The precisely crystalline repeated notes in the opening Allegramente alone were “wow”-worthy." She also played a "wow"-worthy performance of Grieg's famous Piano Concerto in Des Moines, and she finishes the month of May in Birmingham with another favorite: Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.
Joyce Yang's News Blog: Joyce Fiddles Around with "Bolero" added by joyceyang on 23 Apr 2013 tag | report
After Joyce Yang's April 13 performance of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto with the Corpus Christi Symphony and the piano was wheeled offstage, she returned to the stage with a violin. Joyce recounts, "The night before the concert I mentioned that I used to play the violin. Maestro John Giordano joked in passing, 'You should sit in for Ravel's Bolero in the second half!' What started out as a joke became reality when I was handed a violin and my set of scores during intermission. I thought, 'It's now or never!' and proceeded to my chair in the back of the first violin section with a jacket over my gown. There I began my debut as a section player with the instruction, 'When in doubt, just pizz.' It was a thrilling experience, and most importantly, I played my last note with the rest of the orchestra! In the end, Beethoven was probably a lot happier with my performance than Ravel."

At the Sydney Opera House with the Sydney Symphony, "from the moment she sat down to play Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 she owned it," noted J-Wire, praising her "powerful technique" and "finest pianissimo." Joyce also played recitals in Melbourne and Sydney. Arts Hub declared the latter "one of the best piano recitals of the last couple of years."
