Dvorak: Violin Concerto/Sonata/Sonatina - Jack Liebeck, K... added by oxfordmaymusic on 31 Dec 2009 tag | report
Not yet 30, Liebeck recorded the Violin Concerto in 2005 and the later Sonata and Sonatina the following year. Why we have had to wait for this disc is a mystery, but the results whet the appetite for more from this gifted young Brit. Dvorak’s concerto, though now acknowledged a masterpiece, still suffers from its rejection by the dedicatee, Joseph Joachim, in the late 1870s. Liebeck, his tone intense yet unfailingly sweet and lyrical in Dvorak’s “singing” melodies, has an instinctive feel for the music’s folksy idiom, as well as a formidable technique. The slow movement is especially magical. It’s good to have persuasive accounts of the even rarer Sonata in F and Sonatina in G completing an entirely lovely disc. Apekisheva’s musical pianism and Walker’s Royal Scottish National Opera admirably complement Liebeck’s commanding work.
