Although Lawrence Johnson of Chicago Classical Review thought Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto in B flat minor wasn’t a particularly bold choice for Daniil Trifonov’s debut performance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he nonetheless found a lot to like about the young pianist's interpretation of the work. “Still, one will rarely hear this warhorse emerge as fresh and illuminating as in the hands of the young Russian,” he writes. “He brought a lean, leonine power to the virtuosic pages and discovered a distinctive array of expressive nuance throughout with subtle, iridescent coloring and hairpin dynamic turns.” Read the review in its entirety...

This past week, the Boston Symphony Orchestra presented a program of Russian and Spanish-flavored music, featuring two rising classical music stars. In this review of CIM student and pianist Daniil Trifonov's debut performance with BSO (Thursday, Nov. 8), Aaron Keebaugh of the Boston Classical Review writes: "his performance offered much more than virtuosity. He played the lyrical passages...with a singing piano tone and mature sensitivity to the musical phrasing." Mr. Keebaugh's narrative also includes a glowing account of guest conductor Giancarlo Guerrero.

Daniil Trifonov, the young Russian pianist who placed third at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw, first at the Rubinstein in Tel Aviv, and first in the famed Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow...[is now] a hot property, making the rounds to most of the major orchestras and releasing his first recordings. He's debuting this week with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This weekend, pianist Daniil Trifonov (a student of CIM's Sergei Babayan) made his New York Philharmonic. CIM President Joel Smirnoff was in the audience, enjoying the music and undoubltly beaming with pride over our brilliant young artist who "clearly had chemistry" with the orchestra and conductor, as confirmed by Vivien Schweitzer of The New York Times. Mark Satola, writing for The Cleveland Plain Dealer, had wonderful things to say about Saturday night's performance at Blossom Music Center by Daniil Trifonov and The Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by James Gaffigan. Mr. Satola started the piece saying that "the most electrifying moment in Saturday's Cleveland Orchestra performance was not listed on the program" -- it was Daniil's encore. Bravo, Daniil!

The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) will be the world's first university or conservatory to video stream a live concert on both its mobile app and website on November 30, 2011. The second half of a concert performed by CIM's own Daniil Trifonov, winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition Grand Prix, Gold Prize and Audience Prize, will be streamed free of charge. This concert, the second in CIM's 2011-2012 Mixon Hall Masters Series, has sparked great interest and is sold out.
