The Diocese of Atlanta includes 93 congregations in North and Middle Georgia, with some 55,000 members. The diocese was created in 1907 by the division of the Diocese of Georgia, which until that time included the entire state. The seat of the bishop of Atlanta is the Cathedral of St. Philip. The diocese is part of the Episcopal Church, a nationwide community of 2.3 million members established in the United States in 1789. The Diocese of Atlanta is the ninth largest of 100 dioceses. The presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church is the Most Rev. Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori. The bishop of Atlanta is the Rt. Rev. J. Neil Alexander. The Episcopal Church is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion of 70 million people in 38 provinces.

The Cathedral of St. Philip offers a comprehensive choral music program ranging from traditional Anglican to 21st Century choral works. Over 100 volunteer singers, five volunteer organists, and six volunteer pianists along with 12 staff singers and two staff organists, provide music for more than 225 liturgies each year, as well as dozens of weddings and many funerals.
