It has been difficult in recent times to give the LPO concerts under Jurowski anything other than a five star rating. Once again a beautifully thought out concert was executed brilliantly by the maestro and this wonderful orchestra. The crystalline abstractions of Webern's 'Variations for Orchestra' seemed more 'right' than ever and Berg's masterful Lulu Suite more 'lyrical' than usual, with Barbara Hannigan's pitch-perfect rendition of the unfortunate anti-heroine visually and vocally wonderful. After the interval a swiftly measured performance of Bartok's 'Music for Strings, percussion and Celeste' with pinpoint accuracy and no little feeling by the LPO was followed by a suitably ferocious performance of Martinu's martial 'Concerto for Double String Orchestra and Piano.' In both works the strings, percussion and pianist showed amazing dexterity and razor-sharp attack. Bravo LPO; bravo maestro Jurowski.
