Author: Douglas Townsend
This 3-movement concerto for trombone/euphonium/baritone and strings by American composer Douglas Townsend (1921-2012) is performed here in 1980 in a studio production for Musical Heritage Society by Per Brevig, trombone, and the Garden State Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Frederick Storfer. The three movements are: Moderato, Andante (a "fantasy on one note"), and Rondo: Allegro. This work was dedicated by Townsend to his friend, the late trombone virtuoso Davis Shuman, who premiered the work at Manhattan's Cooper Union in the early 1960s at a composers' forum. The piece is published by Theodore Presser and can be alternatively performed with a string quartet, or with a euphonium or baritone as the solo instrument.
