The Levitt Shell hosted this homecoming concert in 2010 for Vaneese Thomas - the youngest sibling of Memphis' first family of Soul and R & B. Her father - Rufus Thomas - never stopped entertaining in a career that included vaudeville, radio, "The Funky Chicken" ,and the earliest hits for both STAX & Sun Records. Sister Carla Thomas -the "Queen of Memphis Soul" grew up with STAX where she began making hits while in high school. And brother Marvell Thomas played keyboards and arranged recordings for many soul greats including the earliest STAX recordings. Vaneese has lived in New York for many years and has made her own reputation as a world-class performer and recording artist. In this video she is joined by another internationally renowned Memphis artist: Saxophonist Kirk Whalum. Whalum has made his own homecoming now by becoming President of the Soulsville Foundation which operates the Stax Museum & Music Academy.
