Ludwig van Beethoven: Variations on “Bei Ma¨nnern, welche Liebe fu¨hlen,” from Mozart’s Die Zauberflo¨te, WoO 4 Oliver Herbert, cello Ying Li, piano Performed on Friday, February 19, 2016 Field Concert Hall, Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia As if more reasons were needed to celebrate Ludwig van Beethoven, modern-day cellists can be thankful for his few but influential works for piano and cello. These liberated the cello from its standard 18th-century position as a simple continuo part that was usually doubled by the left hand of the piano, and gave it an independent role. While a number of Beethoven’s predecessors wrote virtuosic music for cello, including Franz Joseph Haydn and Luigi Boccherini, the idea of the cello as an equal instrumental partner to the piano (or fortepiano, at that time) had yet to be realized.
