I. Allegro agitato – II. Non allegro—Lento – III. Allegro molto Rachmaninoff’s second Piano Sonata was written in 1913 – the composer revised it in 1931, but Jonathan plays the original version. The three movements are played without a break; as themes from earlier movements are recalled, the effect is almost like a single-movement work. This intensely romantic sonata is also one of the most challenging piano works ever written.
