Hugh Wolff, NEC's Stanford and Norma Jean Calderwood Director of Orchestras, leads the NEC Symphony though Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 1 in B-flat major, op. 38 "Spring". In one of the last in-person Jordan Hall concerts of the semester, the NEC Symphony presented Schumann's "Spring" symphony. Conductor Hugh Wolff shares his reflections on this moving concert: “This concert was given to a virtually empty hall: the first COVID-19 restrictions went into effect that afternoon and for everyone’s safety, only students and faculty were allowed into the concert hall—though 3,000 people watched and listened online. The people onstage outnumbered those in the audience! But you would never know that watching and listening to these young musicians play with such passion and precision and hearing the enthusiastic response from those present. It was a powerful and moving experience. Schumann wrote the piece in a wild burst of inspiration over just three days and sleepless nights. Later h
