1841 proved to be a productive year for Mendelssohn where sets of variations are concerned. In addition to the 'Variations Sérieuses' Op.54, he also composed the Variations in E-flat Op.82 and the Variations in B-flat, Op.83. However only the 'Variations Sérieuses' was published in Mendelssohn's lifetime. At the age of eight, Abbey Simon (b.1922) was accepted as a scholarship student at the Curtis Institute by Josef Hofmann. He also received lessons from Leopold Godowsky and Harold Bauer. This recording was released in 1972.
